Calm Down 03:44
you just love highways like this two lanes, straight fucking shot you just love taking your hands off the wheel you love it when my palms get hot it's easier at night with the low beams off 'cause we can see the brake lights for miles your face looks better lit by the distant red than it has in awhile where did that knife go? the one you brought to protect me from something? how many things would have to go wrong? for me to turn and see you slumping down down down and your head hits the wheel first time you've touched it since Bakersfield and your foot's on the gas and we swerve into the horizon and goddamn it I hope it doesn't last
2.
Intro 01:36
take a knife to California split it into two somewhere in the middle that's where i'd find you out where the ocean is but a distant dream out where the sunlight positively beams out where the dead ones always go out where it never snows chowchilla in 2005 chowchilla had 20 consecutive cloudy, rainy days and if that's not enough then let's all raise our voice in praise out by this den of tranquility the central california women's facility tell me a story that rhymes tell me a story of the old days in chowchilla
3.
Fresno 01:46
you look at me and i smile 'cause i don't know what else to do you say you haven't been this far south since 1972 and you say it's gonna be about seven hours 'til we're free and you turn back to the road and i believe you your hair is matted against your skin all damp with sweat i wanna reach out and touch you but we don't know each other that well yet and you say it's gonna be about seven hours 'til we see our new lives coming fast and i believe you
4.
so we go slowly so we keep our thoughts to ourselves so it's hard nobody cares that it's hard so we knock all the product off the shelves i can't trust you with the gun if his legs don't work then he can't run so you run quickly so i try to drown out the screaming it doesn't work i knew it wouldn't we shut the door and it's night so the low light's beaming i can't trust you with anything we turn up the radio and try to sing
5.
stop talking to me like i'm your mother i have never met your mother and you say i'm in another state of mind that reminds you of when you were just a girl staring at the world through a fogged up backseat window so let's go somewhere far away from here let's hope these objects are closer than they appear don't tell me that you miss the inside we are never going back and we will not throw away how we've tried how we've lied how you've cried please stop crying just this once please stop crying so let's go somewhere far away from here let's hope these objects are closer than they appear please stop crying please stop crying please stop crying
6.
Chino 02:41
close your eyes westward remember the breeze keep on stumbling forward you'll miss the desert for the trees just because we trace the line doesn't mean we'll be fine count the seconds always dream of anaheim you want to know about the old days and it's past your bedtime just because you won't sleep doesn't mean i need to keep you awake
7.
Interlude 02:25
what would you say to another game of truth or dare the popcorn's in the microwave and i'm losing my hair and i know it isn't fair but do you even care? what would you say to another way of making friends we can't wait for a better day so let's jump in the deep end and i know your tendencies shooting down my shopping sprees let's dust off the VCR let's black out all the lights we are who we are on every sleepless night what would you say to one last story before bed this scary movie's way too gory for my pretty little head and i wonder if she'll live or if her grip will give what would you say about me if i never came back and will you hear me shouting while you get your payback and i wonder if you'll see you're never getting away from me let's dust off the VCR let's black out all the lights we are who we are on every sleepless night

1976 04:27
it's been a while since i've felt my skull the throbbing's unimaginable i think it happens when my heart beats too fast but who can blame me, with your foot there on the gas and i will be forever somewhere you can't see i'll find the key you'll bring it right to me it's so cute the way you make your plans balled up ransom notes and an old moving van eleven hours 'til we disembark you're risking the whole pot that i'm scared of the dark but I will be forever somewhere you can't see i'll find the key you'll bring it right to me it really pains me to see you like this i wish you all the best in prison crane your neck to the stars every night see how we've arisen and you leave the way you came in there's nothing worse than a loser convinced he's gonna win we stack the mattresses high joke's on you, i am not gonna die cause i will be forever somewhere you can't see i found the key you brought it right to me we stack the mattresses high i am not gonna die crying in this cage ms. brown always said i was resourceful for my age

Bakersfield 03:04
they're detonating every last explosive that they set at my foundation and i'm a house crumbling to the ground way up north they can feel the vibration they're picking through the rubble when they find two skeletons in a bunker down deep testing their heads on the others' shoulder i couldn't tell you which one was me and we'll be okay as long as we stay where we need to stay waiting for the other one to heal in bakersfield, in bakersfield they're dusting off and clearing out the trash that they made when they found us and the newspapers all want an interview but we can't talk and they're oblivious they're shipping us back where we belong to a museum, somewhere far away ket the record show that we both survived we kept each other warm until this fateful day and we'll stay okay as long as we stay where we need to stay waiting for the other one to heal in bakersfield, in bakersfield
10.
The Ghost 02:06
things get clearer in the rearview mirror like that guy standing by the roadsign down the street and when i recognize his figure i get light on my feet a composite sketch of a bad memory made totally complete so i scream and when i scream i scream at you taste of whiskey on my lips another one of my silly tricks like that day when i ran away i never did write you that letter and i can feel you watching me as the tires get wetter and wetter and you'll never forgive me but at least you're in someplace better so i scream and when i scream i scream for you
11.
seven hours seven hours seven hours seven have you ever felt like maybe one of these days you'd go out on a walk and find yourself tracing circles around the block in sidewalk chalk screaming at the edge of the dome and dreaming of the day you'll crawl back home it feels like you'll never break through no matter how hard you try loop back to the start and wait for all the trees to die and notice all the roadsigns and notice how they point down to that single fucking line remember fresno remember bakersfield remember where we go or let me take the wheel and we'll steal the sunset snatch it from the sky just to prove that we already passed this road by one second one second one second one if we pull off the road which i assume we'll often have to do will we be in mexico or will we still be passing through just circling the drain and we'd slip into the pipe if it weren't for this chain tugging on our collars and locking all the doors you think you've done enough well the audience wants more and if we're in hell then just give it to me straight we've got driving to do i don't want to be late remember chino remember bakersfield remember where we go or let me take the wheel and we'll feel our bodies dissolve into the dirt take a knife to California tell me where it hurts you just love highways like this
12.
End 02:49
it's been a bad couple years when we pull into the parking lot there's no reason to spend the night but it's all we've got and up in the room i remember what it means it's a silly kinda metaphor but at least it reads the light, the light stabbing through the blinds makes black lines on my face the sun, the sun is setting now but the lines don't seem to erase i just sit there and you sit there too we don't have to say a thing It's just me and you and your arm around my neck It's the best thing i've ever felt i love you
